"The Benzodiazepine drug group held high
hopes of therapeutic value when first introduced, 50 years ago."
"These drugs have a wide
range of actions:
Hypnotic, anxiolytic, muscle relaxant,anticonvulsant."
These drugs were dispensed and over-prescribed regularly and
often long term, for insomnia, anxiety and depression, exam nerves,
menstrual pain, tinnitus, sports injuries, backache, postviral fatigue,
bereavements and ordinary life stresses...and that's only mentioning a
few...
"In the 1970's Valium (diazepam)
became the most widely prescribed of all drugs in the world."

Valium ...commonly
known as "mommy's little helper" in the 1970's , became overprescribed
because of it's low toxicity and ALLEGED lack of dependence.. however,
in the early 1980's the first backlash came from long-term users who
were trying to quit using the drug...realising that over time the drugs
lost their efficacy, but that they were highly addictive.
Withdrawal effects from abrupt withdrawal range from panic attacks to psychosis and convulsions.
